Background: born and entered early adulthood in Atlanta, Georgia; creation of musical act The Pips; discussion of band members Gladys Knight and brothers including Bubba, as well as cousins Edward Patten and William Guest; Uncle and manager James "Pip" Woods; encouragement of Knight's mother; radio success; performance at Apollo Theater in 1961 following the success of single Every Beat of My Heart; racial discrimination encountered on early tours; Frank Schiffman as mentor to band; professional work with: Charles "Pops" Atkins, Maurice King, Berry Gordy at Motown Records; early appearances of The Jackson 5; reminiscences of Apollo Theater performances; discussions of plans to found music and performance school
