Born 1931 in New York City, childhood in Harlem; career: winner of Apollo amateur night, 1951; tour with Ella Fitzgerald; shows at Copacopana; recordings with the Enchanters and the Deltones, 1950s; first solo record, Miss Gloria Lynne, 1958; 1964 hit and similarly titled autobiography, "I Wish You Love"; lyrics for Herbie Hancock's "Watermelon Man"; treatment of women; spiritual aspect of singing; respect toward musicians; anecdotes of musicians including Miles Davis, Herman Foster, Dinah Washington; singers in church; performances of song excerpts.
