Background: born 1921 in Cuba; move to New York in 1952; recording with Dizzy Gillespie; role as jazz percussionist beginning in 1950s; specialization in conga and bongo drums; receiving of 2008 National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Masters Award; recollections of past venues and fellow performers including Tito Puente, Count Basie and Dizzy Gillespie
