Biographical Note

Architect.

Scope and Contents

Early career: unsuccessful application to work in office of architect Le Corbusier, apprenticeship with Brechbühler and future Atelier 5 partners Rolf Hesterberg and Erwin Fritz; creation of Atelier 5 architectural firm; Siedlung Halen: negotiation with farmers for land rights, difficulty encountered in financing project, assistance of Niklaus Morgenthaler to secure additional funding to purchase land, investment by Ernst Göhner, decision to create pedestrian focused project; scale of design in relation to inclusion or exclusion of space for automobiles; benefits of communal living as opposed to individual free-standing homes; need for private and shared public spaces; housing design projects: Siedlung Halen, Flamatt, Thalmatt 1, Thalmatt 2.
