Biographical NoteElbert Allen (E. A.) Daly was born on November 16, 1891 in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Daly moved to California in 1922. In 1927, he purchased the California Voice, a weekly black newspaper based in Oakland, CA.
Scope and ContentsDaly describes his education, his military service, and the various jobs he held before moving to California and purchasing the California Voice. Daly discusses the circulation and success of the paper as well as how it was impacted by the Great Depression and World War II. Other topics of discussion include: linotype use; real estate investments; the role of the black press in integration; how coverage varied between the white and black presses; what makes good news; the lack of formal education among black journalists; Daly’s involvement with local politics; the impact of the Kerner Commission Report (National Advisory Commission on Civil Disorders) on the white press; and the future of the black press.
