Scope and Contents

Interest in coagulation as a medical student; involvement in early clinical trials of Factor VIII concentrate; development of home care of people with hemophilia by mothers who knew how to give intravenous infusions; reluctance of physicians to "lose control" of patient care when patients attempted to switch to home care; changes in doctor-patient relationship over time and with changes in treatment; development of the team concept in caring for people with hemophilia, particularly as a result of federal funding; regional differences in hemophilia research and care; development of cryoprecipitate by Judith Poole; differences in attitudes toward and treatment of hemophilia in Japan and the United States; components of the "hemophilia community"; California Children’s Service and the Genetically Handicapped Persons Program as models for hemophilia treatment; issues of denial and isolation among people with hemophilia; difficulties in employment and in getting dental and medical care for people with hemophilia; advent of and early experiences with AIDS in people with hemophilia; increased funding for hemophilia treatment as a result of the advent of AIDS; variations within regions and within institutions of hemophilia care; differences in treatment of pediatric hemophiliacs before and after the advent of AIDS; differences in treating pediatric hemophiliac population and pediatric AIDS population
