Scope and Contents

Childhood/adolescent disenchantment with medical system; desire to become advocate for improvement of medical treatment; early knowledge of/research on AIDS at Centers for Disease Control (CDC); mainstream epidemiology versus epidemiology at CDC; first encounter with patient with AIDS and hemophilia; early response to AIDS by hemophilia providers; early research into possibility of HIV transmission via blood products; differences in points of view between epidemiologists and other healthcare providers; response to/involvement with the "hemophilia community"; realization of HIV transmission from people with hemophilia to their sexual partners; expansion of "hemophilia community" to include wives and partners of people with hemophilia; differences between age groups in development of symptomatic AIDS; role of "Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report" in facilitating AIDS research; possibility of a memorial for people with hemophilia who died of AIDS; current work on developing an AIDS vaccine
