Motion-picture writer and director

Scope and Contents

Experiences and impressions as junior writer for Irving Thalberg, 1933-1937; Metro Goldwyn Meyer in the 1930s; Marx Brothers' films; transition to directing; presidency of Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, including project to restore the Library of Congress paper print collection; creative and economic situation of the independent producer. Reflections on writing, directing, camera technique, block booking, censorship. Audio is comprised of narrator's excerpts from the Westinghouse Broadcasting Company's radio program series "Memoirs of the Movies"
