Scope and Contents

"The Day the Screen Screamed" is an episode of the "Memoirs of the Movies" series, produced by Group W of the Westinghouse Broadcasting Company in collaboration with Columbia University's Oral History Research Office. The theme of this episode is the coming of sound to the motion pictures (the advent of the "talkies"). The episode is hosted by Joseph Schildkraut and features the recollections of Janet Gaynor, Harold Lloyd, Richard Barthelmess, Elliot Nugent, Lila Lee, King Vidor, and Sam Raphaelson, The episode also features Ralph Bellamy and Reginald Denny's memories of John Gilbert
