Childhood: born Fitchburg, Massachusetts, son of civil engineer, early education in northern New Jersey; short-term enrollment at Vanderbilt University, 1952; service in Marine Corps, 1953-1956; return to Vanderbilt University, 1956-1958; Massachusetts Institute of Technology: mechanical engineering, 1958-1960; Columbia University [CU]: B.S., geology, 1960-1962; CU, University of Arizona: Ph.D., hydrology; Dartmouth University: visiting professorship, meteorology; tree ring analysis: research in Alaska, Los Angleles, Colorado River Basin, Arizona, 1972-1975; association with Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory [LDEO]: research on tree rings, water and energy, research at sea; controversy between paleohydrology and stochastic schools of thought: gradual acceptance of tree ring theory; development of tree ring instrumentation, facilities at LDEO; reminiscences of colleagues.
