Childhood: born Santiago, Chile, son of mining engineer; University of Chile: mining engineering, 1953-1959; reminiscences of International Geophysical Year, Antarctic exploration, 1957; scholarship to Columbia University: Ph.D., seismology, 1960-1964; acclimatization to American culture; Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory [LDEO]: seismological research, presentation of papers at colloquia, social activities, role of South American government officials in science; move to University of Chile: expansion of geophysical, meteorological, seismological departments, collaboration with American scientists, 1964-1971; return to United States: completion of Ph.D. thesis, University of California at Los Angeles, LDEO, 1971-1973; move to University of Chile, 1973: development of science during government upheaval, funding for seismological instruments; reminiscences of colleagues.
