Childhood: born Buenos Aires, Argentina, son of naval officer, early education at Naval Academy; University of Buenos Aires: telecommunications engineering, 1954-1958; service in Argentine Naval Forces: engineer of Electronic Bureau, commander of small naval reserve ship, 1958-1961; Columbia University: PhD., geophysics, 1961-1965; association with Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory [LDEO]: repair of Vema ships, geophysical research at sea, Puerto Rico trench, development of continental drift theory, publication of Physics and Chemistry of the Earth; move to Bahia Blanca, Argentina: development of new oceanographic institutes, 1969-1976; status of oceanography as field of study; environmental consciousness in Argentina, LDEO; conditions of voyages aboard LDEO vessels; reminiscences of colleagues.
