Childhood: born Honolulu, Hawaii, early education in Arkansas, Arizona, son of Marine Corps captain; California Institute of Technology, 1952-1954; transfer to Pomona University, B.S., geology, 1954-1956; Claremont College, M.A., geophysics; University of California at Los Angeles, PhD., geophysics, 1956-1962; post-doctorate fellowship, Canberra, Australia, 1962-1966; publication of numerous geophysical papers; association with Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory [LDEO]; research for Geophysical Survey, 1966-1980: branch chief; seismic research in China; director, LDEO, 1981; restructuring of Lamont administration; move to School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology at the University of Hawaii; reminiscences of colleagues.
