Scope and Contents

Early medical career in hematology and blood clotting; development of comprehensive hemophilia care center at Tufts New England Medical Center; focus on financial issues and reimbursement by insurers; involvement in NHF, especially in patient education; involvement in leading hemophilia treatment teams to developing countries; involvement in lobbying Massachusetts state legislature for funding for treatment of people with hemophilia; development of federal guidelines for hemophilia treatment centers and a data collection protocol for the centers; relationship between the hemophilia treatment team and the patients; advent of home care for people with hemophilia; existence of two hemophilia "communities" - one of patients and another of hemophilia treatment center staff; phenomena of denial and risk-taking in people with hemophilia; first awareness of AIDS; development of heat treatment of Factor VIII; current work on gene therapy; changing members of hemophilia treatment teams and national and local levels; possibilities of using hemophilia treatment model to treat other chronic diseases
