(1914-2003) Born of German heritage; privileged childhood as daughter of successful German banker during immediate post war, World War I, bilingual education in German and English in the home, strong emphasis on education; Trips to early Hitler Germany; Undergraduate education: Vassar College; Early marriage into army culture; First husband Arthur's suicide, and subsequent mourning; Work for Oxford University Press in 1930s New York City; Political activism against nazism in 1930s New York City; Enrollment in Yale anthropology graduate program after conversation with Bronislaw Malinowski
