Biographical Note

Kimberly Marten earned her B.A. in government from Harvard in 1985 and her PhD in political science from Stanford in 1991. She was hired at Barnard in 1997 and immediately became involved with the Harriman Institute, where she served as the Associate Director from 2002-2004 and the Acting Director from 2012-2014. She is the Ann Whitney Olin Professor of Political Science at Barnard, a faculty member of Columbia's Graduate School of Arts and Sciences and of SIPA. Marten is also the director of the Program on U.S.-Russia Relations at Harriman, and frequently comments on Russia in the popular media. She is a member of Columbia's Saltzman Institute of War and Peace Studies, PONARS-Eurasia, and the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR)

Scope and Contents

Marten speaks about the Harriman Institute at the time of the interview: its recent history, its current and future place at Columbia University, current events and crises, and her hopes for Harriman in the future. She discusses her experiences traveling in the Soviet Union, and then Russia in the immediate post-Soviet period, and the changes she noted across the two trips. She then discusses relations between Harriman and Columbia's School of International and Public Affairs and her experience as acting director of Harriman, including her efforts to foster alumni engagement
