Oral history interview with Lily, 2005

Biographical Note

Lily was born in 1965 in the province of Oriente, Cuba. When she was a baby, her mother left her in the care of an aunt in Havana. Her biological parents were literacy teachers. She completed her primary studies at the Enrique Galárraga school. She did not finish her secondary studies as she became pregnant when she was fifteen years old. Due to the pregnancy, she had to move to Güira de Melena to live with her partner's family. There she worked as a field machinery operator and in the gastronomic field. Then she returned to Havana, where she worked as a cook at the Military Academy, as a shoemaker, and as a pedagogical assistant. During 1998, she lived in San Miguel del Padrón, Havana. Later, she moved to Regla. She worked at the Polyclinic and at the Committee for the Defense of the Revolution (CDR), where she became president. His last job was at the Regla Municipal Museum. Lily was married three times and had three children. Lily was interviewed for the project that led to the book How Things Fall Apart. The name is a pseudonym for the project Lily nació en 1965 en la provincia de Oriente, Cuba. Su madre la dejó a cargo de una tía en La Habana. Sus padres biológicos eran alfabetizadores. Realizó sus estudios primarios en la escuela Enrique Galárraga. No finalizó sus estudios secundarios ya que quedó embarazada cuando tenía quince años. Debido al embarazo, debió mudarse a Güira de Melena para convivir con la familia de su pareja. Allí trabajó como operadora de maquinarias de campo y en el rubro gastronómico. Tras retornar a La Habana, donde trabajó como cocinera en la Academia Militar, zapatera y como auxiliar pedagógica. Durante 1998 vivió en San Miguel del Padrón, La Habana. Luego, se mudó a Regla. Trabajó en el Policlínico y en el Comité de Defensa de la Revolución (CDR), donde llegó a ser presidenta. Su último trabajo fue en el Museo Municipal de Regla. Lily se casó tres veces y tuvo tres hijos. Lily fue entrevistada para el proyecto que culminó en la publicación del libro How Things Fall Apart. El nombre es un seudónimo para el proyecto

Scope and Contents

Lily begins the interview by talking about her childhood and her upbringing. Lily then discusses what it was like to carry a pregnancy as a teenager. Lily describes her jobs and relates them to the places where she has lived. She also describes her family and the bond with her brothers. Lily discusses the Catholic religion. Later, Lily comments on what her life was like as a Black woman in Cuba and discusses racism on the island. She recalls how she met her first husband as she reflects on the sexual education she received from her family. Lily comments that she has had violent relationships with her last two partners. She also talks about motherhood. Finally, Lily reflects on the Revolution and Fidel Castro's role on the island Lily comienza la entrevista hablando sobre su infancia, la crianza que le propició su tía y su educación. Luego, Lily comenta cómo fue llevar adelante un embarazo durante la adolescencia. Lily describe sus trabajos y los relaciona con los lugares donde ha vivido. Después, Lily comenta cómo fue su vida como una mujer negra en Cuba y discute el racismo en la isla.
