Oral history interview with Linda, 2005

Biographical Note

Linda was born in 1923 in Cruces, Cienfuegos province, Cuba. She was the eldest of four children. In 1946, she received a degree in Philosophy and Letters. When she was studying in Havana, she met her husband. She became director of the Instituto Preuniversitario de La Habana. Later, she moved to Santa Clara with her husband. There, she served as a History teacher, vice director, and director of the Instituto Preuniversitario de Guanabacoa. After the advent of the Revolution, she worked as a literacy teacher for the Communist Party. Later, the Communist Party asked her to work at the Guanabacoa Center for the Reeducation of Minors, where she worked as a teacher, head of the course, and secretary. Linda had two children. Linda was interviewed for the project that led to the book How Things Fall Apart. The name is a pseudonym for the project Linda nació en 1923 en Cruces, provincial de Cienfuegos, Cuba. Fue la mayor de cuatro hijos. En 1946, se recibió de Licenciada en Filosofía y Letras. Cuando estaba estudiando en La Habana, conoció a su esposo. Llegó a ser directora del Instituto Preuniversitario de La Habana. Luego, se mudó a Santa Clara junto a su esposo. Allí, se desempeñó como profesora de Historia, vicedirectora y directora del Instituto Preuniversitario de Guanabacoa. Tras el advenimiento de la Revolución, trabajó como alfabetizadora para el Partido Comunista. Más tarde, el Partido Comunista le solicitó que trabajara en el Centro de Reeducación de Menores de Guanabacoa, donde se desempeñó como profesora, jefa de cátedra y secretaria. Linda tuvo dos hijos. Linda fue entrevistada para el proyecto que culminó en la publicación del libro How Things Fall Apart. El nombre es un seudónimo para el proyecto

Scope and Contents

In the first session, Linda recalls her work as a history teacher and as a literacy teacher for the Communist Party. Her participation in the “La escuela al campo” program stands out. Linda reflects on the passion she finds in being a teacher and how she passed that passion on to her daughter (who works as a Culture and Health teacher). She also discusses machismo in Cuba, especially in the educational sector. In the second session, Linda shares the interview with her husband. The two discuss the benefits of quitting smoking and the dangers of cancer. In the third session, Linda describes her birth and her family. Later, Linda remembers how she met her husband, who used to be her teacher. Linda reflects on the arguments she had with her family when she told them she had a crush on her teacher and that she was going to marry him. In the fourth session, Linda discusses racism in Cuba before and after the Revolution. Later, Linda recalls her uncle's influence in joining the Communist Party and reflects on the obligations that come with being a member of the Party. Lastly, Linda describes her work at the Centro de Reeducación de Menores de Guanabacoa and recalls violent and problematic situations with her former students En la primera sesión, Linda recuerda su trabajo como profesora de Historia y como alfabetizadora para el Partido Comunista. Destaca su participación en el programa La escuela al campo. Linda reflexiona sobre la pasión que encuentra en ser docente y sobre cómo transmitió esa pasión a su hija (quien trabaja como profesora de Cultura y Salud). También discute el machismo en Cuba, en especial en el sector educativo. En la segunda sesión, Linda comparte la entrevista con su marido. Los dos discuten los beneficios de dejar de fumar y los peligros del cáncer. En la tercera sesión, Linda describe su nacimiento y su familia. Luego, Linda recuerda cómo conoció a su esposo, quien supo ser su profesor. Linda reflexiona sobre las discusiones que tuvo con su familia cuando les contó que estaba enamorada de su profesor. En la cuarta sesión, Linda discute el racismo en Cuba antes y después de la Revolución. Luego, Linda recuerda la influencia de su tío a la hora de ingresar al Partido Comunista y reflexiona sobre las obligaciones aparejadas a formar parte del Partido. Por último, Linda describe su trabajo en el Centro de Reeducación de Menores de Guanabacoa y rememora situaciones violentas o problemáticas con sus ex estudiantes
