Biographical Note

Paula was born in Vedado, Cuba in 1935. She completed her pre-university studies at the Instituto de Segunda Enseñanza. Later, she studied Pharmacy at the University of Havana. In 1960, she received military training. Between 1960 and 1970, she taught Chemistry at the University of Havana and at the Murrian Grimado Technological Institute. In 1970, she joined the Academy of Science, where she conducted psychiatric and anthropological research and biological trials within the framework of Transcultural Psychiatry. In 1993, she retired and started writing fiction books. Paula participated in a theosophical lodge. Paula was interviewed for the project that led to the book How Things Fall Apart. The name is a pseudonym for the project Paula nació en Vedado, Cuba, en 1935. Realizó sus estudios preuniversitarios en el Instituto de Segunda Enseñanza. Luego, estudió Farmacia en la Universidad de La Habana. En 1960, recibió formación militar. Entre 1960 y 1970, fue profesora de Química en la Universidad de La Habana y en el Instituto Tecnológico Murrian Grimado. En 1970, ingresó a la Academia de Ciencia, donde realizó trabajos de investigación psiquiátrica y antropológica y ensayos biológicos enmarcados en la Psiquiatría Transcultural. En 1993, se jubiló y comenzó a dedicarse a escribir libros de ficción. Paula participó de una logia teosófica. Paula fue entrevistada para el proyecto que culminó en la publicación del libro How Things Fall Apart. El nombre es un seudónimo para el proyecto

Scope and Contents

Paula begins the first session by talking about her childhood, the pranks played into as a child and her private education in Vedado. She then comments on her routine as a pre-university student and her fondness for the radio soap operas of the time. Paula recalls her time at the university and her first jobs in the scientific field. She also recalls the weekend clubs and the movies from the Hollywood's Golden Age that she went to see at the cinema. Paula discusses the scientific evaluation committees that graded her performance at the Academy of Science. Paula discusses her admiration for Fidel Castro and her anti-Castro family. Paula discusses Cuban migration to the United States in the run-up to the Revolution. She then recalls a period of depression she went through when she was young. Finally, Paula discusses libraries in Havana. In the second session, Paula describes the theosophical lodge of which she is a part. She then discusses the changes in the government following the arrival of Raul Castro to the presidency. Paula also discusses housing problems, food shortages, lack of medical personnel, and Cuba's relationship with Venezuela. Paula explains what cross-cultural psychiatry is and discusses her work with populations of color in juvenile prisons. Finally, she recalls the rallies in Havana to welcome Fidel Castro after the victory of the Revolution. In the last session, Paula discusses the October Crisis, the Unidad Militar de Ayuda a la Producción (UMAP), the fall of the Soviet Union, and the role of the military in Cuban society. Next, Paula discusses racism, the role of women, and machismo. Finally, Paula discusses the complications of accessing books and Elizabeth Dore's project Paula comienza la primera sesión dialogando sobre su infancia, las travesuras en las que se metía cuando era pequeña y la educación privada en Vedado. Luego, comenta su rutina cuando estudiaba en el pre-universitario y su afición por las radionovelas de la época.
