Oral history interview with Raidel, 2006

Biographical Note

Raidel was born in Havana, Cuba on January 24, 1979. His mother died when he was seven years old. His father was in prison, so Raidel was raised by his grandmother. At the age of 17, he committed a crime that led him to serve a sentence in a Reeducation Center. In this Center, he finished his high school studies. At the end of his sentence, Raidel dedicated himself to clandestine commerce. Raidel was interviewed for the project that led to the book How Things Fall Apart. The name is a pseudonym for the project Raidel nació en La Habana, Cuba, el 24 de enero de 1979. Su madre falleció cuando tenía siete años. Su padre estaba preso, por lo que Raidel fue criado por su abuela. A los 17 años, cometió un delito que lo llevó a cumplir condena en un Centro de Reeducación. En dicho Centro, terminó sus estudios secundarios. Al terminar su condena, Raidel se dedicó al comercio clandestino. Raidel fue entrevistado para el proyecto que culminó en la publicación del libro How Things Fall Apart. El nombre es un seudónimo para el proyecto

Scope and Contents

At the beginning of the interview, Raidel discusses his birth and growing up with a father deprived of his freedom. Raidel recalls his first crime. Then, he discusses the precarious conditions in Cuban prisons and the impossibility for former prisoners to reintegrate into social life. Raidel comments on the situation of tourism in Cuba. He also discusses the economic crisis and the repression of the youth. Raidel recalls the racial problems he has had to face as a Brown man while discussing racism and social classes. Raidel also recalls the repression of rafters during the 1990s. Raidel discusses the rise of nightlife, illegal substance abuse, and drug trafficking. He also discusses homosexuality and sex work. Raidel discusses the growth of religiosity in Cuba as an effect of a need for protection. Finally, Raidel discusses education and the lack of nurses on the island Al comienzo de la entrevista, Raidel dialoga sobre su nacimiento y sobre crecer con un padre privado de su libertad. Raidel recuerda su primer delito. Luego, dialoga sobre las precarias condiciones de las cárceles cubanas y la imposibilidad de reinserción a la vida social que tienen los ex presos. Raidel también recuerda la represión a los balseros durante la década de 1990. Raidel discute el encarecimiento de las actividades nocturnas, el consumo de sustancias ilegales y el narcotráfico. A su vez, discute la homosexualidad y el trabajo sexual. Raidel dialoga sobre el crecimiento de la religiosidad en Cuba como efecto de una necesidad de protección. Por último, Raidel discute la educación y la falta de enfermeros en la isla
