Oral history interview with Eva, 2006

Biographical Note

Eva was born in Havana, Cuba in 1960. She was raised by her godparents. She attended Adalberto Gómez Elementary School and Forjadores del Futuro High School. She did her undergraduate studies at the José Martí Institute. Her first job was as a secretary in the Statistics Committee. Eva had twin sons, both of whom died a few hours after birth. She is a Protestant. Eva was interviewed for the project that led to the book How Things Fall Apart. The name is a pseudonym for the project Eva nació en La Habana, Cuba, en 1960. Fue criada por sus padrinos. Asistió a la escuela primaria Adalberto Gómez y a la secundaria Forjadores del Futuro. Hizo su pregrado en el Instituto José Martí. Su primer trabajo fue como secretaria en el Comité de Estadísticas. Eva tuvo dos hijos mellizos, los cuales murieron a las pocas horas del parto. Ella es protestante. Eva fue entrevistada para el proyecto que culminó en la publicación del libro How Things Fall Apart. El nombre es un seudónimo para el proyecto

Scope and Contents

Eva begins the interview by talking about her godparents' upbringing and the education she received. Eva recalls the pranks she played at school and her disinterest in school. She also remembers her father's care and the violence he used to exert on her. Eva recalls her pregnancy, how she found out she was going to have twins, and the death of her children. Eva comments on the relationships she has had. She remembers one of her ex-boyfriends, who left on a raft for the United States in 1994. Eva discusses the Mariel Exodus. She then discusses her relationship with the Pentecostal Church and her participation in support groups for tobacco use.
