Oral history interview with Alfonso, 2005

Biographical Note

Alfonso was born in Cuba in 1938. He attended high school in Holguin. Later, he studied Commercial Sciences. At the end of his studies, he became ill with hepatitis. Still ill, he left for Matanzas to attend seminary and become a pastor. While in Matanzas, he was hospitalized due to complications in his liver caused by hepatitis. After five years, he recovered and dedicated himself to religious pastoral life. He had twenty-six siblings and one son. Alfonso was a Quaker. Alfonso was interviewed for the project that led to the book How Things Fall Apart. The name is a pseudonym for the project Alfonso nació en Cuba en 1938. Cursó sus estudios secundarios en Holguín. Luego, estudió Ciencias Comerciales. Al finalizar la carrera, se enfermó de hepatitis. Aún enfermo, partió hacia Matanzas para cursar el seminario y convertirse en pastor. Mientras estaba en Matanzas, fue hospitalizado por complicaciones en el hígado producto de la hepatitis. Tras cinco años, logró recuperarse y se dedicó a la vida pastoral religiosa. Tuvo veintiséis hermanos y un hijo. Alfonso pertenecía a los cuáqueros. Alfonso fue entrevistado para el proyecto que culminó en la publicación del libro How Things Fall Apart. El nombre es un seudónimo para el proyecto

Scope and Contents

Alfonso begins the interview by describing his family. He then recalls his life as a student. He also recalls the period when he contracted hepatitis. Alfonso comments on his first approach to the Church and his family's link to religion. Alfonso describes his seminary studies to become a pastor and the times when he had to leave because of his unstable health. Alfonso reflects on the persecution of religious movements during the Revolution and on the Cuban press. Finally, Alfonso discusses the role of youth in the continuity of the Revolution and the link that young people establish with the United States Alfonso comienza la entrevista describiendo su familia. Luego, recuerda su vida como estudiante. También recuerda el período en el que contrajo hepatitis. Alfonso comenta su primer acercamiento a la Iglesia y el vínculo de su familia con la religión.
