Biographical Note

Soray was born in Guisa, Cuba on November 14, 1983. Her mother was a librarian and her father, an officer at the National Institute of Sports, Physical Education and Recreation (INDER). She moved to Santiago to pursue her pre-university studies, where she majored in Psychometry. She worked in the psychological accompaniment of HIV-positive people. In her free time, she likes to listen to new music. Soray is a lesbian woman. Soray was interviewed for the project that led to the book How Things Fall Apart. The name is a pseudonym for the project Soray nació en Guisa, Cuba, el 14 de noviembre de 1983. Su madre era bibliotecaria y su padre, un cuadro político del Instituto Nacional de Deportes, Educación Física y Recreación (INDER). Se mudó a Santiago para cursar sus estudios preuniversitarios, donde se especializó en Psicometría. Trabajó en el acompañamiento psicológico de personas VIH positivas. En su tiempo libre, le gusta escuchar nueva música. Soray es una mujer lesbiana. Soray fue entrevistada para el proyecto que culminó en la publicación del libro How Things Fall Apart. Scope and Contents

Soray begins the first session by discussing the marginalization of Cuban lesbians. She then discusses her relationship with her family, especially her brother, a gay man. Soray comments on the economic situation in Cuba, Fidel Castro's illness, and the effects of the economic blockade. Soray describes her work as a psychological counselor for HIV-positive people. She then discusses her first lesbian relationships, hate towards gays and lesbians, the film Fresa y Chocolate, and gay and lesbian exile. Soray discusses her relationship with tourists. Soray recalls the repression of gays and lesbians in other historical periods. In the second session, Soray discusses how she survives the scarcity of work. Soray discusses her new partner. She also returns to discuss hate towards gays and lesbians in public places and their exile. Soray discusses Mariela Castro's role in the sex-dissident struggles. She then talks about Cuban music and discusses the role of exiled musicians in the United States. Soray comments on the privileges of tourists on the island.
