Oral history interview with Ileana, 2004

Biographical Note

Ileana was born in 1950 in Alamar, Cuba. She studied to be a secretary at the School of Economics in Havana. In 1968, she entered the University of Havana to work as a mimeographer. In 1978, she began working as a secretary at Cubalse and began working at the Ministry of the Interior in 1979. She retired in October 2000. She had one son. Ileana was interviewed for the project that led to the book How Things Fall Apart. The name is a pseudonym for the project Ileana nació en 1950 en Alamar, Cuba. Estudió para ser secretaria en la Escuela de Economía de La Habana. En 1968, ingresó a la Universidad de La Habana para trabajar como mimeógrafa. En 1978, comenzó a trabajar como secretaria en Cubalse, para comenzar a trabajar en el Ministerio del Interior en el año 1979. Se jubiló en octubre del 2000. Tuvo un hijo. Ileana fue entrevistada para el proyecto que culminó en la publicación del libro How Things Fall Apart. El nombre es un seudónimo para el proyecto

Scope and Contents

In the interview, Ileana recalls her time in the Ministry of the Interior (MININT). Then, Ileana comments on the departure of her son's father to the United States and raising a child as a single mother. Ileana discusses homosexuality and lesbianism in Camagüey. She also discusses the use of contraceptives, family unity and gender violence. Ileana recalls the Special Period. Ileana discusses racism in the different governmental spaces in which she has worked. Ileana discusses the problems associated with the opening of Cuba to tourism. Finally, Ileana reflects on prostitution and state health services En la entrevista, Ileana recuerda su paso por el Ministerio del Interior (MININT). Luego, Ileana comenta la partida del padre de su hijo hacia Estados Unidos y la crianza de un niño como madre soltera. Ileana discute la homosexualidad y el lesbianismo en Camagüey.
