Oral history interview with Silvio, 2005

Biographical Note

Silvio was born in Campo Florido, Cuba, in 1928. He was raised by his uncle. Since he was a child, he dedicated himself to the care of the family farm with his grandfather. In 1962, he joined the National Association of Small Farmers (ANAP) as a cooperative member. He carried out militant tasks together with ANAP, such as the organization of the Credit and Service Cooperatives. Silvio was interviewed for the project that led to the book How Things Fall Apart. The name is a pseudonym for the project Silvio nació en Campo Florido, Cuba, en 1928. Fue criado por su tío. Desde pequeño, se dedicó al cuidado de la finca familiar junto a su abuelo. En 1962, se incorporó a la Asociación Nacional de Agricultores Pequeños (ANAP) como cooperativista. Realizó tareas militantes junto con la ANAP, como la organización de las Cooperativas de Crédito y Servicio. Silvio fue entrevistado para el proyecto que culminó en la publicación del libro How Things Fall Apart. El nombre es un seudónimo para el proyecto

Scope and Contents

In the first session, Silvio recalls his upbringing in the countryside and the teachings his grandfather gave him to work the land. Silvio discusses his connection with the agricultural cooperatives, the Agrarian Reform and the changes in campesino life that came with the Revolution. He also reflects on the life of the Cuban guajiro. Silvio compares his life with that of those born after the Revolution. In the second session, Silvio discusses cultural shows in Cuba. He also comments on the use of medicinal herbs En la primera sesión, Silvio recuerda su crianza en el campo y las enseñanzas que le dio su abuelo para trabajar la tierra. Silvio dialoga sobre su vínculo con las cooperativas agrícolas, la Reforma Agraria y los cambios en la vida campesina que llegaron con la Revolución. También reflexiona sobre la vida del guajiro cubano. Silvio compara su vida con la de aquellos que nacieron después de la Revolución. En la segunda sesión, Silvio dialoga sobre los espectáculos culturales en Cuba. También comenta el uso de hierbas medicinales
