Oral history interview with Elisa, 2008

Biographical Note

Elisa was born on January 8, 1961 in Vedado, Cuba. Her father worked in the Ministry of Finance during the Fulgencio Batista dictatorship. After the arrival of the Revolution, her father had to go into exile in the United States. Elisa was raised by her mother and grandmother. She was a child model. Later, Elisa dedicated herself to the study of the piano. She took a test at the Escuela Nacional de las Artes, which allowed her to study piano at the Amadeo Roldán School. She married a drummer, with whom she had two children. They divorced and he left with his son to live in Spain. Elisa had breast cancer. Elisa was interviewed for the project that led to the book How Things Fall Apart. The name is a pseudonym for the project Elisa nació el 8 de enero de 1961 en Vedado, Cuba. Su padre trabajaba en el Ministerio de Hacienda durante la dictadura de Fulgencio Batista. Tras la llegada de la Revolución, su padre debió exiliarse a Estados Unidos. Elisa fue criada por su madre y su abuela. Cuando era pequeña, fue modelo infantil. Luego, Elisa se dedicó al estudio del piano. Realizó una prueba en la Escuela Nacional de las Artes que le permitió estudiar piano en la Escuela Amadeo Roldán. Se casó con un baterista, con quien tuvo dos hijos. Se divorciaron y él partió junto a su hijo a vivir a España. Elisa tuvo cáncer de mama. Elisa fue entrevistada para el proyecto que culminó en la publicación del libro How Things Fall Apart. El nombre es un seudónimo para el proyecto

Scope and Contents

In the interview, Elisa comments on her father's departure to the United States. She then recalls her work as a child model and her piano studies. She also recalls her time at the Escuela al Campo. Elisa comments on her stay in Yarey with her husband while they were doing social services. Elisa recalls her life during the Special Period, the depression she suffered after the birth of her second daughter, and her departure to the United States for psychiatric treatment. She recalls her husband's work as a musician in different parts of the world and the subsequent separation. Elisa describes the treatment she received for breast cancer. Elisa discusses the incorporation of women into the labor market and the division of household chores. She then discusses Raul Castro's governmental administration En la entrevista, Elisa comenta la partida de su padre hacia Estados Unidos.
