Oral history interview with Yohanca, 2007

Biographical Note

Yohanca was born in Santiago de Cuba in 1961. She studied Biology but abandoned her studies to get married. She had a daughter with her husband and divorced a few months later. She worked in the Geology Company. She studied to become an X-ray and imaging technician. Since then, she has worked in various hospitals in Santiago. Yohanca is a lesbian. Yohanca was interviewed for the project that led to the book How Things Fall Apart. The name is a pseudonym for the project Yohanca nació en Santiago de Cuba en 1961. Estudió Licenciatura en Biología, carrera que abandonó para casarse. Con su marido tuvo una hija y se divorció unos meses más tarde. Trabajó en la Empresa de Geología. Estudió para ser técnica de rayos X e imagenología. Desde entonces, trabajó en diversos hospitales de Santiago. Yohanca es lesbiana. Yohanca fue entrevistada para el proyecto que culminó en la publicación del libro How Things Fall Apart. El nombre es un seudónimo para el proyecto

Scope and Contents

Yohanca begins the interview by describing the desire she had as a child to have genital reconstruction and identify as male. Yohanca comments on the insults she was called as a child. She then recalls the moment she told her family that she was a lesbian and the support she received from them. Yohanca recalls her studies and her first jobs. Yohanca reflects on the social changes in favor of homosexuals that took place in Cuba. She recalls the Mariel Exodus, the Special Period, and the humiliation of those who emigrated from the country. Yohanca compares life in Santiago with life in Havana. Finally, she reflects on the taboo surrounding virginity and the lack of access to sex education Yohanca comienza la entrevista describiendo el deseo que tenía cuando era niña de realizarse una reconstrucción genital e identificarse como varón. Yohanca comenta los insultos que le decían cuando era niña. Luego, recuerda el momento en el que le dijo a su familia que era lesbiana y el apoyo que recibió por parte de ellos. Yohanca recuerda sus estudios y sus primeros trabajos. Yohanca reflexiona sobre los cambios sociales en favor de los homosexuales que se dieron en Cuba. Ella recuerda el Éxodo de Mariel, el Período Especial y la humillación a quienes emigraban del país. Yohanca compara la vida en Santiago con la vida en La Habana. Por último, reflexiona sobre el tabú en torno a la virginidad y la falta de acceso a la educación sexual
