Biographical Note

Alina was born in San Miguel del Padrón, Havana, Cuba, in 1984. Her mother was an epidemiologist and her father an industrial engineer. She attended 12 de septiembre High School and the Vladimir Ilyich Lenin Vocational Pre-University Institute of Exact Sciences. She studied film at the Instituto Superior de Arte (ISA). She was a documentary filmmaker. Alina was interviewed for the project that led to the book How Things Fall Apart. The name is a pseudonym for the project Alina nació en San Miguel del Padrón, La Habana, Cuba, en 1984. Su madre era epidemióloga y su padre, ingeniero industrial. Asistió a la secundaria 12 de septiembre y al Instituto Preuniversitario Vocacional de Ciencias Exactas Vladímir Ilich Lenín. Estudió cine en el Instituto Superior de Arte (ISA). Fue documentalista. Alina fue entrevistada para el proyecto que culminó en la publicación del libro How Things Fall Apart. El nombre es un seudónimo para el proyecto

Scope and Contents

In the first session, Alina recalls her childhood in San Miguel del Padrón, a settlement in Havana. She also recalls the bond she had with her cousin, the Elián González episode, and her time at the Lenín Institute. Alina describes how she entered the Instituto Superior de Arte. She recalls her fondness for art from a very young age. Alina describes her life at the Instituto Superior de Arte and discusses the lack of economic resources to produce films. In the second session, Alina comments on her experience filming a documentary in San Miguel del Padrón. Alina recalls the police interventions in the filming because they did not want her to film the precariousness of the settlement. She also recalls having the same problem in Santiago de Cuba, where neighbors joined in the persecution. Alina discusses permits to film. Alina discusses marginality and clandestinity in Cuba En la primera sesión, Alina recuerda su infancia en San Miguel del Padrón, un asentamiento en La Habana. También recuerda el vínculo que tenía con su primo, el episodio de Elián González y su paso por el Instituto Lenín. Alina describe cómo fue su ingreso al Instituto Superior de Arte. Ella recuerda su afición por el arte desde muy pequeña. Alina describe su vida en el Instituto Superior de Arte y dialoga sobre la falta de recursos económicos para producir cine. En la segunda sesión, Alina comenta su experiencia filmando un documental en San Miguel del Padrón. Alina recuerda las intervenciones policiales en la filmación debido a que no querían que filmase la precariedad del asentamiento. También recuerda haber tenido el mismo problema en Santiago de Cuba, donde los vecinos se sumaron a la persecución. Alina discute los permisos para filmar. Alina dialoga sobre la marginalidad y la clandestinidad en Cuba
