Biographical Note

Neysha Irizarry Ortiz was born on January 26, 1989, in Ortoray, Puerto Rico, and was brought up in Culebra. During her nursing studies, she was diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma. She took a break from her education to focus on her treatment and recovery. She gave birth to her second child during Hurricane María. She has worked in hotels and guesthouses. Neysha Irizarry Ortiz nació el 26 de enero de 1989 en Ortoray (Puerto Rico) y se crió en Culebra. Durante sus estudios de enfermería, le diagnosticaron linfoma de Hodgkin. Dejó de estudiar para centrarse en su tratamiento y recuperación. Dio a luz a su segundo hijo durante el huracán María. Trabajó en hoteles y pensiones

Scope and Contents

Irizarry Ortiz describes the procedure for women giving birth on Culebra, involving travel to the main island under the guidance of their OBGYN. She also describes growing up on Culebra on a community-oriented neighborhood with limited facilities. She discusses the aftermath of Hurricane María. Ortiz discusses her pregnancy in detail, including the challenges she faced without access to basic utilities like water and electricity. She recalls the birth of her second child during the hurricane, as she went into labor on Culebra in the aftermath of the hurricane, long before electricity and communications were restored. She recalls her baby being premature and being delivered by Culebra's sole doctor in a temporary clinic with no electricity and no running water. Then, she discusses how an air ambulance finally arrived and took both her and her new baby to San Juan. She discusses how her newborn son had to spend weeks in the neonatal intensive care unit until he was strong enough to go home with them.
