Childhood and college; early training in medical social work; publication of ANALYZING SOCIAL WORK PRACTICE BY FIELDS, 1961; attempt to overcome divisionism in social work in late 1960s and 1970s; publication of THE COMMON BASE OF SOCIAL WORK PRACTICE, 1970; merits of casework and groupwork and the desirability of an eclectic rather than psychoanalytical approach to social work.
