Childhood in Minnesota; University of Minnesota, BA 1926; early social work experience with Jewish Social Service Bureau of Chicago, 1927-1932; student, New York School of Social Work; courses with Grace Marcus, Fern Lowry, and Gordon Hamilton; influence of Sigmund Freud on career; professor, University of Chicago, from 1945 on methods of eaching social work; theories of social work.
