Biographical Note

Senior Partner, Webster, Sheffield, Fleischmann, Hitchcock & Brookfield; Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Carnegie Corporation of New York; Chairman of the Board, New School for Social Research; Olympic gold medalist rower, 1924 Olympic Games.

Scope and Contents

Invited by Morris Hadley to chair committee regarding the Community Service Society’s School of Social Work, 1944; became Carnegie Corporation trustee, 1955; the transition between John W. Gardner’s and Alan J. Pifer’s Corporation presidencies, 1966-1967. Discussions of the process of selecting Carnegie grantees; lack of diversity on the Carnegie Board of Trustees and the process of selecting board members; the possibility of increasing Carnegie support of social services; the issue of foundations providing financial support to politically controversial programs; providing honorariums to board members; the relationship between foundation presidents and trustees; reflections on his Carnegie chairmanship; future usage of the Andrew Carnegie Mansion at 2 East 91st Street.
