Childhood in Van Nuys, California; college at University of California at Los Angeles; early involvement with Students for a Democratic Society (SDS), 1968; movement from SDS to Progressive Labor (PL); relations among various radical movements at UCLA; issues and demonstrations at UCLA; induction into and service in the Army, 1969-1970: anti-war agitation among troops, courts martial, and eventual discharge; end of affiliation with PL; work with American Civil Liberties Union on legal suit against Los Angeles Police Department for illegal surveillance, 1982-1985
