Early life in Indiana; education; farming; observation of the farm revolt and the McNary-Haugen movement in the 1920s; election to the Indiana Senate, 1932; Corn and Hogs Section of the Agricultural Adjustment Administration; Agricultural Conservation Program; the Depression and the Department of Agriculture; experience as Under Secretary, 1940, and Secretary, 1940-45, of Agriculture; World War II; Lend-Lease; inter-American conferences on agriculture; work with the Rural Electrification Administration.
