Director of statistics, Social Security Board, 1935-1939: compilation of statistics on poverty, unemployment, illness; Director, Unemployment Insurance System, 1939-1946: increase in duration of benefit payments during World War II, post-war readjustment; Commissioner of Labor Statistics, Department of Labor, 1946-1954: publication of statistics on United States economy, promotion of better labor/management relations in industry, establishment of Consumer Price Index, assistance to foreign countries in developing unemployment insurance; special assistant to Secretary of Labor, Lewis Schwellenbach; adjustment of Consumer Price Index, aid to state governments in organizing unemployment insurance programs.
