Growing up in Pittsburgh; effect of living with his large, extended family; culture clash between the Irish and Italian sides of the family; studying engineering at the University of Pittsburgh; experiences in the Navy during WWII; maple syrup making venture; graduate work in mathematics at the U. of Pittsburgh; his career at IBM, from salesman to upper management; accepting the Presidency of Sarah Lawrence College; various problems at the college, including financial difficulties, and conflicts with faculty and Board of Trustees; implementing business management paradigms in an educational setting.
