Childhood experiences in Pennsylvania, family background; Bucknell University, A.B., 1912; studying economics at Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania; Columbia University, Ph.D. in sociology, 1923; staff of Surgeon-General of the Army in World War I; executive secretary of the Committee on Mental Hygiene of the New York State Charities Aid Association, 1919-1923; changing sociological attitudes and practices toward mental disabilities in the 1920's; Professor of Sociology, Bucknell University, 1923-24; general director of the Charity Organization Society; work for Community Service Society, Association for Improving the Condition of the Poor, New York State Mental Health Association, the New York City Office of Mental Hygiene, and many other mental health organizations.
