Family and early education; growing interest in arts and literature; decision to leave Massachusetts Institute of Technology (M.I.T.), 1947; work in mining camp; University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, B.A. and M.A.; courtship and marriage to Mary Frances Fitzgibbon; University of Wisconsin, Madison, Ph.D.; experiences teaching English composition, University of Tennessee at Knoxville, Princeton University; teaching at Chapel Hill; hiring by trustees of Amherst College as Director of Folger Shakespeare Library, Washington, D.C., 1969; duties and responsibilities as Director, Folger Shakespeare Library: fundraising, founding of Folger Theater, renovation and reorganization, attempts to generate community interest and involvement.
