Educator, activist; interviewee b. 1920.

Scope and Contents

Family and early education; work with United Automobile Workers, Detroit, 1943-1948; doctoral candidate, Harvard, 1949-1954: relationship with faculty, job offer as Dean of Special Students, 1954; withdrawal of offer because of former membership in Communist Party; efforts of some faculty to intervene on his behalf; decision to inform prospective employers of events at Harvard and effects on job search, especially at Amherst and Columbia; visiting assistant professor at Columbia, 1955; links between Harvard and Federal Bureau of Investigation during McCarthy period.
