Childhood; freelance photographer in San Francisco, 1928-1935: f. 64 group, gallery manager, exhibitions; theater in New York, N.Y. during the 1930s; cameraman and director of documentary films, including "The River," "The City," "Valleytown," and "San Francisco"; Frontier Films, 1930s and 1940s: "Native Land," "China Strikes Back" and others; independent film producer, 1946-1958; television director for Robert Saudek's "Omnibus" and "20th Century"; Lowell Thomas; director, film department, Museum of Modern Art 1965-1975; head, film department, State University of New York at Purchase, 1973-1977; seminars on Robert J. Flaherty from 1965; film as social commentary; differences between cinematography and photography; music and documentaries: work of Aaron Copland, Marc Blitzstein and others;reminiscences of Edward Weston, Pare Lorentz, Ralph Steiner, Irving Jacoby, John Grierson, Lowell Thomas, Richard Leacock, Walter Cronkite and others.
