Domestic servant, singer.

Scope and Contents

Family history; recollections of her grandfather, Monroe Prentiss, and his work as a plantation blacksmith, tenant farming; youth in Mississippi, playing guitar for a traveling minstrel show; impressions of Bessie Smith; work as a house maid for 27 years; beginning career as a singer in her seventies; physical and economic difficulties of later life.
