Columbia Center for Oral History Portal > Arthur Levitt project : oral history, 1983-1987.Scope and ContentsThe career of Arthur Levitt (1900-1980) is recounted by family, friends and associates, with particular emphasis on his redefinition of the role and function of New York State Comptroller, a post which he occupied from 1954-1978. His contribution to the office included a new concept of fiduciary responsibility and giving it the character of an aggressive auditor of state and local monies; he believed he had converted the office into a nonpartisan one, in the same sense as a judgeship.
