Intellectual background; recollections of Lyle Spencer through Tyler's position as chair of Science Research Associates' Educational Advisory Board, 1950- ; impressions of several products: Selective Service Qualifying examination, the Reading Laboratory, American College Testing Program; creation of the Spencer Foundation: finding board members, a chair and president; method of finding good research and effective distribution of funds; description of Tyler's own work as Director of the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences.
