Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church.

John Maury Allin, 1921- ; Family background, education, University of the South, Sewanee Seminary; ordination as deacon in the Episcopal Church in 1944 and as priest in 1945; early parish experiences in Arkansas, Mississippi and Louisiana; college work, prison chaplaincy; marriage and family; president and rector of All Saints Junior College, Vicksburg; election as bishop coadjutor of Mississippi, 1961; election to 6-year term on Executive Council of national church, 1970; participation in Anglican Roman Catholic conversations; Episcopal Radio and TV Foundation; the church and communications, Seabury Press; move of church headquarters; General Convention of 1973 and election as Presiding Bishop; discussion of events and developments during tenure as Presiding Bishop. 1974-1985: organization of national church headquarters, budget, ordination of women, revision of 1928 Prayer Book, ecumenism and Consultation on Church Union, National and World councils of Churches, church and politics, church and communications, stewardship, racism, minority groups, televangelism, homosexuality, travel, relations of Episcopal Church to other churches in the Anglican Communion, Lambeth Conference of 1978, sale of Seabury House, fundraising and Venture in Mission; analysis of role and authority of Presiding Bishop, responsibility to and for a church with internal divisions; role in retirement.
