Childhood: born Youngstown, Ohio, son of social workers; Oberlin College: B.A., psychology, 1949-1953; service in United States Marine Corps, 1953-1955; University of Michigan: Ph.D., education and psychology, 1956-1958; psychologist, chief diagnostician, MIchigan public school system; interest in early childhood education; formation of High/Scope Perry Study: research on education of economically disadvantaged preschool children, funding from Carnegie Corporation; experiments in infant education; changes in grantmaking philosophy; reminiscences of colleagues.
