Family and youth, Athens, Georgia; education: A.B. in History, University of Georgia, 1941; work at IBM; M.A. in Political Science, Northwestern University, 1944; National League of Women Voters, employee, 1944-1947; effects of World War II on women in academia; PhD dissertation on Southern progressives in National Congress, Radcliffe College, 1958; Professor at the University of North Carolina, 1959-1960 and at Duke University, 1961-1980; Chairman of the Governor's Commission on the Status of Women in N.C., 1964-1968; writes The Southern Lady, 1970; career focus on women's history and race; Carnegie Board of Trustees, 1976-1984; relationships with Alan Pifer and David Hamburg; issues: Retreats, grant giving and project effectiveness, Agenda Committee, staff/trustee relations; reads extensively from personal journal and includes excerpts at end of interview.
