Director, Traumatic Stress Studies Unit and the Anxiety Disorders Clinic and Columbia's Psychiatric Institute.

Scope and Contents

Background: psychology B.A., specific interest in post traumatic stress disorder [PTSD]; original plan to research role of psychological trauma in severely mentally ill patients; New York Consortium for Effective Trauma Treatment: personal involvement in the large scale dissemination of PTSD information to New York physicians, sessions on grief counseling, initial funding from New York Times Foundation and other private philanthropic entities, training of thousands of people in intensive two-day sessions, attempt to also attain training grant for Sri Lanka, decrease in financial support, termination of treatment program; 9/11: in Seattle, Washington at a lecture, in Seattle for five days more due to 9/11, feeling of pain and loneliness, family in New York, importance of family in 9/11 period; 9/11 NYC population: discussion of trauma, effect of on New York community, discussion of traumatic grief; post-9/11 PTSD: numerous phone calls to New York State Psychiatric Institute in regards for PTSD physicians training, discussion of the "Ivory Tower Model," decision to aid NYC physicians; work study: principles of trauma recovery, treatment of grief-stricken patients, different stages of grief, therapeutic role of narrative reconstruction; discussion of New York 9/11 experience versus the rest of the country; importance of mental health; effect of brother's death around 9/11.
