Born (1951) Asheville, NC; education: St. Olaf College, Indiana University, New York University Law School; career: lawyer, White House Fellow, New York City Fire Department [NYFD], President of Women in the Fire Service; NYFD: lawsuit over gender discrimination in entrance exam, harassment, job responsibilities prior to 9/11; 9/11: reporting to duty, assignments around Seven World Trade Center, lack of organization, description of destruction; post-9/11: discussion of masculine depiction of the firefighter 'hero', coping with death of colleagues, obtainment of rights for widowed and unmarried female partners, dependence on fellow firefighters, changes in fire department.
