Born Queens, NY, raised Long Island, NY; family background in firefighting; career: Division of AIDS Services work, New York Fire Department [NYFD]; NYFD work: probation period, discrimination and sexual harassment, behavioral patterns between firefighters; 9/11: learning of attack while driving in Queens, reporting to work, arriving to World Trade Center on firetruck, working through rubble; post-9/11: emotional disconnect while working at ground zero, physical effects of labor, NYFD expectations for attending funerals, masculine “hero” rhetoric, firefighter sex appeal.
