Fire Marshal, Fire Department of New York.

Scope and Contents

Born Connecticut; childhood: Brooklyn; initiation into Islam 1977; career: military service, camera grip, firefighter since 1981, fire marshal since 1985; founder of Islamic Society of Fire Department Personnel in 1997; 9/11: witnessing events at World Trade Center [WTC] site: dust, fire, debris, fear; command post; post-9/11: temporary morgues, firefighter heroism, changes in firehouses, writing article for Newsday; anti-Muslim sentiment: work with civil rights organizations, fire department's Muslim chaplain, need for understanding within international community.
